Mags sprints to 200m bronze in Åland

ORKNEY athlete Mags Macrae has clinched bronze in the Island Games women's 200m in Åland
this evening, coming home in a time of 25.46secs in what was a very
close race.
Gold went to Gemma Dawkins of Jersey in 25.08secs, with Hariet Pryke of the Isle of Man clocking 25.20 to win silver.
The bronze medal for Mags takes Orkney's tally to six medals in all at
the Games, and makes up for her disappointment at being pipped for
third in the final of the 400m earlier in the week.
Opportunity to crew a native Canadian canoe in Scapa Flow

THE CANADIAN Spirit Dancer canoe is due to arrive in Orkney tomorrow morning (Friday) after a journey north up the west coast of Scotland.
The 42 foot canoe which left Glasgow on May 6 is set to arrive off the Hamnavoe after being paddled most of the way up the west coast. It will then be put back in the water and paddled to Scapa beach.
Orkney wins gold at Island Games

ORKNEY have won their first gold medal at the Natwest Island Games in Aland.
The Orkney archery team, consisting of Alan Bowmer, Ian Kennedy, Jim Middlemas, Stewart Stanger and Norah Bowmer. beat the Faroe Islands 214-209.
This is now the fifth medal that Orkney has won, after silver medal success in the sporting team shoot and the women's shot putt.
Orkney also won bronze medals in the single FITA mens' archery compound competition and the mens' automatic ball trap final.
Firefighters tackle Rendall hill fire

A HILL fire near Norseman in Rendall on Wednesday afternoon destroyed
around eight acres of heathland before it was brought under control by
firefighters from Stromness and Kirkwall.
Berstane Road closed after explosion

AN EXPLOSION in a residential garden in Berstane Road, Kirkwall, is currently being attended to by fire fighters.
A Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said two appliances from Kirkwall attended the scene, after receiving the call at 12.54pm.
He said: "Two propane gas cylinders had overheated and were venting air; they had to close the cylinder heads and apply water for at least an hour. One of the cylinders had exploded, but the cause is not known."
Identity of body found on Sanday confirmed

POLICE have confirmed that the body found on Sanday last Thursday is that of Robert Rose.The 54-year-old father of three had been missing since Saturday June 6.
Mr Rose's family have been informed.
Toilets were set on fire

THE male public toilet in the Finstown car park was set on fire overnight last Thursday, June 25 - 26.
In the Harray area, a garden wall was damaged by a vehicle sometime between 5pm -9pm on Monday, June 29.

Sanday residents remanded in custody

THE two men arrested in the case of missing Sanday man Robert Rose appeared on petition in private at Inverness Sheriff Court on Tuesday June 30.
John Black Campbell, 59, of Sanday, is charged with murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
Stephen Crummack, 50, of Sanday, is charged with attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
Both men were judicially examined, both made no plea or declaration, were fully committed and were remanded in custody having made no motion for bail.
Shot putt silver for Claire Wilson

A FINAL throw of 11.04m has given Orkney's Claire Wilson silver medal in the shot putt at the Island Games in Aland.
Claire had been in third place earlier in Tuesday afternoon's competition, but was lying in fourth before the final
round, so her throw to clinch second was met by loud cheers
from the Orkney support near the throwing circle.
It is a great achievement for Claire, who was Orkney's joint captain in
the recent Junior Inter-County, where she broke the record and set a
personal best of 11.42m.
Orkney now has four medals from the Aland Games, with the shooting team of Brian Foreman
and Magnus Norquoy having secured bronze in the men's automatic ball
trap final, and archer Stewart Stanger winning bronze in the single
FITA men's compound, both on Tuesday.
