Chance to be a Stromness guide
23/10/2009 09:40:00
A Stromness Studies Course, covering aspects of the town from architecture to wartime heritage to flora and fauna, is to be run by Orkney College from February 2010.
Course director and Orkney tour guide Fran Flett Hollinrake said: "This
will be a fantastic opportunity to develop tourism is Stromness, and
enable local people to learn more about the
area."
A lecture series with local experts sharing their knowledge will be
held in the Maritime Studies department and will be open to anyone.
A training course will also be run for those interested in becoming a
tour guide in Stromness. This will be assessed and accredited by the
Scottish Tourist Guides Association and lead to a STGA Yellow Badge
qualification.
This course will include all aspects of guiding, from speaking and
presentation skills to best business practice and on-site practical
training.
Applicants will need to feel comfortable with speaking in public, enjoy
meeting people, and have access to the internet. Suitable applicants
will be invited for interview.
The guiding course will cover two main routes: a town walk from the
Pierhead to the South End, and a coastal walk from Point of Ness to the
Ness Battery, including access to the Battery itself.
The course is part of the Stromness Townscape Heritage Initiative, and
is also part of the Scapa Flow Landscape Partnership Scheme. Funding
has been provided by The Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland, and
the European Regional Development Fund.
