PRAISE has been heaped on the school in Papa Westray after it emerged that is the first in Orkney to receive an 'excellent' rating from Government education inspectors.
Councillors said it was a remarkable achievement and hoped that other schools in the county would seek to match the new benchmark set by Papay.
A recent report by HM Inspectorate of Education rated seven aspects of
the school's performance as either 'good' or 'very good' - with the
experiences of primary age learners described as 'excellent'.
Assistant education director Marilyn Richards told Orkney Islands
Council's education committee:
"It is a very good report for Papay. This is the first 'excellent' we have had in Orkney."
At the time of the inspection in June, the school had seven pupils, two of them in the nursery class.
