<title><![CDATA[Alcohol awareness workshops for pupils]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[ORKNEY Islands Council's Education and Leisure Services in partnership with Orkney Alcohol and Drugs Partnership is teaming up with Scottish Youth Theatre, Scotland's national theatre by and for young people, for a creative alcohol awareness project with all Primary 7 and Secondary 1 pupils in the county. <br /><br />The Wise Choices workshops will take place from March 8-9  with organisers hoping to develop aspects of the workshops with schools in the future.<br /><br />]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[ORKNEY and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael is asking people in the Northern Isles to tell him their recent experiences with the banking sector after the publication of a report critical of the failure of the banks to reach binding lending targets.<br /> <br />Mr Carmichael is a member of the Scottish Affairs Select Committee, which yesterday published a report into the experience of small and medium businesses with the banking sector since the onset of the financial crisis. ]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[Continued without plea]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[THE case against a teenager accused of three assaults and breaching the peace was continued without plea at Kirkwall Sheriff Court this afternoon.<br /><br />19-year-old William Mills, of Little Twinness, Tankerness, appeared from custody on Monday, March 8, charged with conducting himself in disorderly manner, shouting, swearing and committing a breach of the peace at Pipersquoy Terrace on Sunday, March 7.<br /><br />He is also accused of assaulting a woman and two men at the same address. He is charged with grabbing hold of the woman and pushing her against wall, repeatedly throwing punches at one man, punching him on the head to his injury, and repeatedly butting the other man on the head, pulling him to the ground and repeatedly kicking him in the head, all to his injury.<br /><br />Mills was ordered to reappear in court on March 17. In the meantime he was released on bail, under the special condition that remain in his home from 7pm - 7am each day.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[A FULL SCALE rescue was launched last night (Thursday)  after a man who was attempting to free a bird trapped in a bush himself became trapped on a ledge on cliffs near Kirkwall.<br /><br />Shetland Coastguard who co-ordinated the rescue said that they were informed of the situation on the cliffs at Inganess  around 5.30pm.<br /><br />]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[Second charity talent show will take place on Saturday]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[AFTER a great start in the West Mainland last weekend, the second Talented Orkney heat will take place in the St Andrews Community Centre at 7.30pm this Saturday, March 6.<br /><br />12 acts are due to take to the stage in the East Mainland; singers, musicians and dancers will perform to win the approval of the judges and the audience, who can vote for their favourite acts. <br /><br />Entry costs £3 and each vote is £1. Last week's event raised a fantastic £859, to be split between CLIC Sargent and CLAN,and the organisers are hoping this weekend they can raise even more!<br />]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[THE Orkney Library and Archive's Discovery Week started yesterday,Thursday March 4 to coincide with World Book Day. For the next week there are events and competitions taking place to highlight the range of services and resources available in Orkney's libraries.<br /><br />This afternoon there will be a representative from the Switchover Help Scheme answering questions in the Kirkwall Library foyer and the Orkney Library Book Sale starts. <description><![CDATA[FLOTTA primary school could be mothballed in the next school year as there will be no primary or pre-school aged children on the island.<br /><br />This is in stark contrast to last year when the school roll had nine pupils. However, with four pupils moving up to attend Kirkwall Grammar, and another three leaving the island for other reasons, the number of pupils has been reduced to two.<br /><br />]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[TWO Citroën Berlingo vehicles were vandalsised in the Broad Street Gardens carpark in Kirkwall, to the rear of Judith Glues, in the early hours of Sunday morning. One, a van, had its rear window smashed, the other had its front windscreen smashed and bodywork damaged.<br /><br />Another car was damaged after being struck from behind on White Street, Kirkwall, last Thursday February 25.<br /><br />Anyone with information is asked to contact Kirkwall Police Station on 872241.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<br />SPEAKING after the verdict in the Sanday murder trial Sue Foard, District Procurator Fiscal at Kirkwall, said: &quot;This was a crime which shocked the community in Orkney and people across Scotland.  John Campbell killed Robert Rose in his own home and with Stephen Crummack used his car to transport his body to a place where they hoped it would never be found.<br /><br />&quot;The attack on Mr Rose, the callous concealment of his remains and the repeated attempts of both accused to deflect attention away from their involvement in his death caused considerable anguish to his family and friends, who were forced to wait nearly two weeks before his body was recovered.]]></description>

burying his body in sand dunes on an Orkney island cut short their
deliberations today, Monday, after one of them became unwell.<br />

Jack Campbell, 59, and Stephen Crummack, 51, deny murdering Bob Rose on
the Orkney island of Sanday on June 6 or 7, last year, and attempting
to defeat the ends of justice by covering up the crime.<br />
<br />
The jury retired to consider their verdicts early in the afternoon, but
after one of them became ill the judge Lord Turnbull decide to send
